The High School for Girls Potchefstroom is a jewel of a school steeped in more than a century’s traditions that have set our path and given us the vision to be the best.
The school song, warcries, uniform, The Pearl magazine, Gaudium newspaper and of course the ever-stylish basher have been part of our repertoire for over a century. At our school, it is these treasures that cultivate and nurture our Girls High spirit, ethos and sense of unity.
The name our school has, the reputation and the traditions are synonymous with our success in all spheres: academic, sport, culture and service. The four corners of our diamond-shaped badge bear the school motto, Res Severa verum Gaudium, which rings true for every young woman who has had the privilege of passing through our gates.
As a gesture of goodwill and appreciation, the girls of Girls High knitted and sent socks and gloves to the South African soldiers conscripted to fight in the Second World War. After the war knitting became a Girls High tradition. Each girl is required to knit strips every year, which are sewn together to create blankets that are then given to different charity organisations.
Small change is also collected every Friday morning. At the end of the year, organisations that are in need are identified and the items bought with the money collected are handed over to them at our annual Children’s Day celebration.
The end of a Girls High girl’s journey is marked by a final act of service when she donates her school shoes on the day of her last Matric exam.
